Direct Support Staff

Job Description

  • Build positive and caring relationships with individuals with intellectual disabilities or brain injuries.
  • Implement person-centered plans and goals as outlined in the individualized service plan (ISP).
  • Assist individuals with ADLs, including but not limited to dressing, bathing, grooming, meal preparation, and medication administration as required.
  • Ensure that individuals receive appropriate healthcare support and follow prescribed treatment plans.
  • Encourage individuals to participate in community activities, social events, and educational opportunities.
  • Foster social connections and help individuals build relationships with peers and community members.
  • Support individuals in acquiring and enhancing life skills, including communication, self-advocacy, decision-making, and problem-solving.
  • Provide opportunities for skill-building and personal growth.
  • Maintain accurate records of daily activities, progress, and incidents in accordance with HCBS program requirements.
  • Report any significant changes in the individual’s health, behavior, or well-being to the support coordinator or program supervisor.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of individuals by maintaining a clean and hazard-free environment.
  • Be prepared to respond to emergencies and follow established safety protocols.
  • Communicate effectively with individuals, their families, and healthcare professionals.
  • Collaborate with the support coordinator, program supervisor, and other team members to ensure the individual’s needs are met.
  • Advocate for the rights and choices of individuals with intellectual disabilities or brain injuries, ensuring they have a voice in decisions affecting their lives.
  • Previous experience in providing direct care or support to individuals with intellectual disabilities or brain injuries is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to follow care plans and documentation procedures accurately.
  • Compassion, patience and a commitment to promoting the well-being and independence of individuals served.
  • Ability to assist individuals with mobility, personal care, and other activities as needed.
